Briefly, the specific objectives of PROT3CT are to identify cost effective packages of improvement options to enhance the energy performance of traditional dwelling typologies in Turkey, help increase awareness of residents, custodians of heritage, policymakers and academia of climate resiliency, and provide knowledge exchange to establish sustainable impact and collaborative links.

In depth, aims and objectives of the project can be listed as follows:

  1. Identify and assess cost-effective packages of improvement options to enhance energy performance of a set of traditional dwelling typologies in Turkey under present and future climate risk, ensuring that they are consistent with social, cultural, architectural and technical constraints.
  2. Quantify potential energy efficiency improvements by modeling, and identify potential ways in which the most appropriate options can be promoted to target communities in Turkey.
  3. Help increase awareness of residents, custodians of heritage, policy makers and academia for the impact of climate change on the built environment in Turkey. Build research and engagement opportunities for the Turkish universities with the local communities and with both UK and Turkish academia and policymakers.
  4. Help inhabitants of traditional residential buildings to deal with fuel insufficiency resulting from low energy performances of historic structures through the retrofitting proposals developed at the end of the project. In this way, PROT3CT will help to improve the living condition of inhabitants and contribute to rise of the welfare level in Turkey.
  5. Provide knowledge exchange and an enhanced reach within the relevant research community via capacity building workshops for dialogue about short- and long-term research gaps in built environment retrofit.
  6. Help establish policies that facilitate deployment of science and technology in energy performance evaluation and improvement of built environment.
